HOW WILL WE KNOW WHEN WE'RE DEAD

by Bobby Byrd / Jim Ward
illustrated by Jim Ward
Out of Stock. You might find it on itunes.
$15.95

How Will We Know When We're Dead is a recording of Bobby Byrd reading his poems to music created by Jim Ward of Sparta.

The idea had been to get together and make an album in the style of the Beat Generation, but revisited and revamped for modern times. Byrd would read his poetry at his natural cadence and Ward would write music behind it for color.

He asked me,
How will we know
when we’re dead

In paradise
There’s a dog pissing on the canna lilies
There’s five hummingbirds
(some people say there’s seven…)
There’s daydreams
about the soft clothes of lovely women
Maybe
there’s my own breathing.
There’s the whispers
of God saying that inside my own house
there’s my own wife she’s taking a bath she
loves to be clean…

From The Civil Defense League / Doghouse Records
How Will We Know When We're Dead is a retrospective album of 25 years of the poetry of Bobby Byrd given new life by the music of Jim Ward (leader of the rock band SPARTA). Byrd reads his poems the way only Byrd can, and Ward provides the perfectly-suited sonic landscape.

The idea had been to get together and make an album in the style of the Beat Generation, but revisited and revamped for modern times. Byrd would read his poetry at his natural cadence and Ward would write music behind it for color.

I write a lot of poetry myself, so my curiosity was piqued when I was given the chance to review this album. “How Will We Know We’re Dead” is collaboration between Sparta vocalist Jim Ward and poet Bobby Byrd, and despite my initial skepticism, I really enjoyed listening to this. Jim handles the music and crafts a deep, soaring soundscape that perfectly showcases Bobby Byrd’s soft, southern tinged voice as he reads his poetry, which can only be described as moving and passionate. I feel the stress leave my body as I listen to this record, as well as the creeping inspiration to write.
