In Mexico City, an old woman entices a young, street-smart taxi driver to be her chauffeur. Her vehicle is a cherry 1942 Ford, a classic ride. Together they circle through the city which, as time passes, becomes the city of the old woman’s youth: the 40’s and 50’s. Modelo Antiguo is a novel of love, a love which is both enigmatic and terrible, and at times very touching.
Translated by Joe Hayes and Sharon Franco.
Library Journal
"A hugely entertaining love story that circumvents time and place and culture. Reyes is well-known in his native Mexico. This fast-moving novel, his first to be published in English, is a welcome addition to all literary collections."
Kirkus Reviews
Reyes makes it all work in a deft tale that’s part character study, part comic nightmare, and altogether engrossing and satisfying.
