This third installment in the D-Bow High School Hoops series (preceded by Next, 2013, and Slump, 2014) continues the story of Derrick Bowen, an African American high-school basketball player. Universities around the country are aggressively courting him, hoping to recruit him for their basketball programs, but when Derrick is sidelined by an injury, he realizes how tenuous his dream—and hopes for his future—really are. Derrick’s first-person narration is strong and distinctive, and the teen-speak and basketball vernacular make the numerous sporting sequences exciting to read. Derrick is a young man given a lot of responsibility, particularly in terms of his future sporting career, and learns from his experiences and mistakes. A strong cast of secondary characters alternately support or sabotage Derrick as he tries to avoid the pitfalls of inner-city life and the mistakes he’s seen peers and family members make. Though events from previous books are mentioned, this works as a stand-alone as well, and the bittersweet ending sets the stage for Derrick’s senior year.
