Cinco Puntos Press RIF Books
Cinco Puntos Press is proud to be a registered vendor in
the Reading is
Fundamental (RIF) program. Our 2007 RIF catalog is our largest yet and features
our best RIF prices ever. We believe our
books are a perfect fit for RIF’s new
multicultural literacy project.
Founded in 1966, RIF is the oldest
and largest children's and family nonprofit literacy organization in the
United
States. RIF’s
highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through
community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provides 4.5 million children with 16 million new,
free books and literacy resources each year. In the summer of 2007 RIF launched its Multicultural Literacy Campaign to
address a persistent gap in minority children reading scores. "There is growing
research and awareness of the importance of children being exposed to books that
reflect their own culture," said Violet Harris, professor of curriculum and
instruction, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "When
children see themselves in the books they read at a young age, they are more
likely to want to read more often.”
We offer an excellent
list of books that are deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of Hispanic,
African American and Native American communities. To download a pdf of the Cinco Puntos Press RIF catalog, click here. For more information

Cinco Puntos RIF Bestsellers A Gift for Papa Diego / Un regalo de Papá Diegoby Benjamin Alire Sáenz"A border is nothing for people who love." Full of child appeal,
Garcia's painted clay, claymation-style illustrations are unusual and
entertaining. Sensitively told and true to the experience of many
Mexican Americans, this bilingual picture book bridges the borders that
separate all families who must live far apart from their loved ones. —Booklist
Ghost Fever / Mal de Fantasma by Joe Hayes
*2006-2007 Texas Bluebonnet Award Winner*
Hayes’s
short chapters make this perfect for classroom read alouds, as well as
for independent reading. Sure to be popular with young chapter book
readers who enjoy a chill running down the spine, Ghost Fever is also
recommended for reluctant older readers. Librarians and booksellers
would do well to display and handtalk this title. —Críticas

The Festival of Bones / El festival de las calaverasA Little-Bitty Book for the Day of the Deadby Luis San VicenteOn Mexico's Day of the Dead, the skeletons jump for sheer joy. And no
wonder: they’ve been cooped up the whole year long and now they’re
ready to party. Watch the calaveras shake, rattle and roll as they
celebrate the biggest event of the graveyard’s social calendar!
