Rudolfo Anaya
Rudolfo Anaya

Rudolfo Anaya was born in the New Mexican village of Pastura, but grew up in Santa Rosa, where the family moved when he was a small boy. The themes of his writing include a strong sense of his Chicano heritage, an emphasis on the wisdom of the old way, and a continual quest for spiritual healing that includes indigenous, Catholic and Eastern traditions. The landscape of New Mexico provides the setting for most of his work. Indeed, la tierra becomes a dominant theme: a holy ground, the field where all human drama is measured.

Bless Me, Ultima, Anaya's first novel, has become a classic of contemporary literature, with well over a million copies in print. His long list of national and international awards include the prestigious Premio Quinto Sol National Chicano Literary Award for Bless Me, Ultima and the PEN Center West Award for fiction for his novel, Alburquerque, the first of three Sonny Baca mystery novels. In the last several years he has turned his story-telling talents to writing children's books, all of which emphasize the legends and mythologies of his Chicano and Native American ancestors. But Anaya has never been satisfied with his own accomplishments as a writer. He has always been an active force in local, regional and national literary affairs, especially in promoting the Chicano and Native American literatures of the American Southwest.

Cinco Puntos has published a children's non-fiction book by Rudolpho Anaya titled Elegy on the Death of César Chávez, which is available in hardback and paperback.
